15Those who remained behind will say, when you will proceed to the spoils (of war) to receive them, “Let us follow you.”They wish to change the words of Allah. Say, “You shall not follow us. Allah had said like this beforehand.” Then they will say, “No, but you are jealous of us.” On the contrary, they do not understand (the reality) but a little.

Commentary

The left behind will say, those who stayed behind from the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah, when you set out to the spoils, to the spoils of Khaybar, that they may change the words of Allah. It has been read as 'the word of Allah', that they may change Allah's promise for the people of Hudaybiyyah. This is because He promised them that He would compensate them with the spoils of Khaybar for what they missed out on from the spoils of Mecca. Mahmoud said: 'What is meant by the words of Allah is His promise to the people of Hudaybiyyah regarding the spoils of Khaybar as compensation for what they miss from the spoils of Mecca... etc.' Ahmad said: 'The first interruption is the known one, and the second is the strange and sweet one, which does not have a contradiction between the first and the second, but rather a clear addition and established exaggeration. The second attribution to them is harsher than the first attribution, because the first is related to ignorance about something specific, which is their attributing envy to the believers, while the second is considered ignorance in general. And a lack of understanding in a continuous manner.' If they return, they will not obtain anything from them. It was said: It is His saying, 'You will never go out with me.' You envy us for obtaining spoils with you. It has been read with the 's' pronounced and with it broken. They do not understand except for a little understanding, which is their awareness of worldly matters rather than religious matters, as His saying, 'They know what is apparent of the worldly life.' If you say: What is the difference between the two letters of interruption? I say: The first interruption means to reject that Allah's ruling is that they should not follow them and to affirm envy. The second interruption is to shift from describing them by attributing envy to the believers, to describing them with something worse, which is ignorance and a lack of understanding.
