Commentary
And it was recited: 'to their people.' And 'was adorned,' in the form of the doer, which is either the devil or Allah, glorified and exalted is He. Both have come in the Qur'an: 'And the devil adorned for them their deeds,' and 'We adorned for them their deeds.' And 'the ruin' is from [UNTRANSLATED-LATIN: baar], like 'the destruction' is from [UNTRANSLATED-LATIN: halak], in both form and meaning. And thus it is described for the singular and plural, masculine and feminine. It may be a plural of [UNTRANSLATED-LATIN: ba'ir] like [UNTRANSLATED-LATIN: 'a'id] and [UNTRANSLATED-LATIN: 'awdh]. The meaning is: and you were a people corrupt in yourselves, your hearts, and your intentions; there is no good in you. Or you are doomed before Allah, deserving of His wrath and punishment.
