Commentary
That is a subject and what follows it is its predicate. That is: that matter, which is the misguidance of the deeds of one of the two groups and the expiation of the sins of the second, occurs because of the following of these in falsehood and those in truth. It is permissible that this is the predicate of an omitted subject, meaning: the matter as mentioned because of this reason. Thus, the position of the genitive and the noun governed by it is established in this way, and it is raised in the first case. And the falsehood is what is not beneficial. And from Mujahid: the falsehood is the devil. This saying is what the scholars of rhetoric call a tafsir. Just as that, Allah sets forth for the people their examples. The pronoun refers back to the people, or to those mentioned from the two groups, meaning: He sets forth their examples for the people so that they may take heed from them. If you say: Where is the setting forth of examples? I say: In that He made the following of falsehood an example of the deeds of the disbelievers, and the following of truth an example of the deeds of the believers. Or in that He made misguidance an example of the failure of the disbelievers, and the expiation of sins an example of the success of the believers.
