Commentary
When he mentioned the state of the believers and the state of the disbelievers, he said: If you know that the matter is as mentioned, regarding the happiness of these and the misery of those, then remain steadfast on what you are upon of knowledge of the Oneness of Allah, and on humility and self-effacement: by seeking forgiveness for your sins and the sins of those on your religion. And Allah knows your conditions, your actions, and your movements in your livelihoods and your trades. He knows where you settle in your homes or your movements in your lives and your resting places in the graves. Or your movements in your deeds and your resting places in Paradise and Hell. Such a One is truly deserving of being feared and revered, and to be asked for forgiveness and mercy. And from Sufyan ibn 'Uyaynah: he was asked about the virtue of knowledge, so he said: Did you not hear His saying when He began with it: 'So know that there is no deity except Allah and seek forgiveness for your sin'? He commanded action after knowledge and said: 'And know that this worldly life is but play and amusement' until His saying: 'Race to the forgiveness from your Lord.' And He said: 'And know that your properties and your children are but a trial.' Then he said afterwards: 'So beware of them.' And He said: 'And know that whatever you obtain of anything, then indeed, for Allah is one-fifth of it.' Then he commanded action afterwards.
