If you say: From where does the statement of Allah, the Exalted, "Indeed, knowledge is with Allah" correspond as a response to their saying, "So bring us what you promise us"? I say: From the fact that their saying is a hastening from them for the punishment. Do you not see the statement of Allah, the Exalted, "Rather, it is what you hastened for"? He said to them: I have no knowledge of the time when your punishment will be wise and correct. Only Allah knows that. So how can I call upon Him to bring you His punishment at a time you propose? And the meaning of: "And I will convey to you what I have been sent with"—and it has been read with less emphasis—is that which is my concern and condition: that I convey to you what I have been sent with of warning and fear, and to turn you away from what exposes you to the wrath of Allah with all my effort. But you are ignorant and do not know that the messengers were only sent as warners, not as proposers or asking for anything other than what they were permitted.
