Commentary
And for each of the two mentioned kinds, there are degrees based on what they have done, meaning ranks and levels of reward for what they have done of good and evil, and because of what they have done of both. If you say: How is it said: degrees, while it has come: Paradise has degrees and Hell has depths? I say: It is permissible to say that in a way of predominance, as each encompasses both groups. And He will fully pay them. It has been read with a 'noon' as a reason for a reason that is omitted, as if it were said: And He will fully pay them for their deeds and not wrong them their rights: the measure of their reward is based on the measure of their deeds. Thus, reward is made degrees and punishment is made depths.
