Commentary
And it is recited: 'And the Hour' with the accusative case, as an addition to the promise, and with the nominative case, as an addition to the position of 'if' and its subject. What is the Hour? What is the Hour? If you say: What is the meaning of 'We do not think except a thought'? I say: Its origin is 'we think a thought.'
And its meaning is: Affirming the thought alone. So, he included the particles of negation and exception, to convey the affirmation of the thought while negating everything else. And he added the negation of anything other than the thought as an emphasis with his saying: 'And we are not certain.'
...The evils of what they have done, meaning their vile deeds. Or the punishments of their evil deeds, like His saying, glorified and exalted is He: 'And the recompense of an evil deed is an evil deed like it.'
