Commentary
And so that you may seek of His bounty through trade or by diving for pearls and coral, and extracting fresh meat, and other benefits of the sea. If you say: What is the meaning of 'from Him' in the saying 'all of it from Him' and what is its grammatical position, I say: It is in the position of a حال (state), and the meaning is that He has made these things, existing from Him and obtained from Him. It means that He is the creator and originator of them by His power and wisdom, then He has made them subservient to His creation. It is also possible that it is the news of a deleted subject, its estimation being: they are all from Him, and that 'and He has made subservient to you' is an affirmation of His saying: 'He has made subservient to you.' Then the saying begins: 'Whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth, all of it from Him.' And it may be that 'whatever is in the earth' is the subject, and 'from Him' is its news. Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, read it as 'from Him,' and Salamah ibn Muharib read it as 'from Him,' on the basis that 'from Him' is the subject of 'made subservient' in a figurative sense. Or it could be that it is the news of a deleted subject, meaning: that is from Him.
