Commentary
And what is between them and what is between the two kinds. And Ubaid bin Umair recited: 'And what is between them.' And he recited: 'Their appointed time' with the accusative, as it is the subject of the sentence, and 'the Day of Judgment' is its predicate. That is, the time of their reckoning and recompense is on the Day of Judgment. A patron, whatever patron it may be, from kinship or otherwise, will not avail any patron anything, meaning, not even a little of it, nor will they be helped. The pronoun refers to the patrons, as they are many in meaning, since the term encompasses all patrons in general, except for whom Allah has mercy. It is in the nominative case as a substitute for the 'and' in 'they will be helped.' That is, nothing prevents from punishment except for whom Allah has mercy. It is also permissible for it to be in the accusative as an exception. Indeed, He is the Mighty; He does not help anyone who disobeys Him, and He is the Merciful to those who obey Him.
