Commentary
They are humble, diminished, and reduced by what befalls them of humiliation. They may be affected by humiliation, looking on, and they are stopped at being humble, looking from a hidden glance. Their gaze begins with a weak, concealed movement of their eyelids, as one sees a prisoner looking at the sword. This means the one who is imprisoned for execution. This is explained in the dictionaries. And thus is the gaze of the observer towards the unpleasant things: he is unable to open his eyelids to them and fill his eyes with them, as he does when looking at what he loves. It is said that they will be gathered blind, so they will not see except with their hearts. This is a glance from a hidden side. And there is hardship on the Day of Resurrection. It may relate to 'they have lost,' and the saying 'the believers' applies in this world, or it may relate to 'they say,' meaning they will say on the Day of Resurrection when they see them in that state.
