Commentary
If you say: What are the aspects of the three readings in وَيَعْلَمَ? I say: As for the jasm, it is based on the apparent conjunction, and as for the raf', it is based on the resumption. And as for the nasb, it is for the conjunction on a deleted justification, its estimation being: to take vengeance on them and to know those who argue. Similar to this in the conjunction on the deleted justification is not rare in the Qur'an, such as His saying, 'And let us make it a sign for the people,' and His saying, 'And Allah created the heavens and the earth in truth, and so that every soul may be recompensed for what it earned.' As for the saying of al-Zajjaj: the nasb is based on the implication of 'an,' because before it is a condition, you say: What you do, I do like it and I honor you. And if you wish, 'and I honor you,' is based on: 'and I honor you.' And if you wish, 'and I honor you' in jasm, there is a consideration regarding what Sibawayh mentioned in his book. He said: And know that the nasb with fa and waw in the saying: 'If you come to me, I will come to you and give you' is weak, and it is similar to his saying: 'And join the Hijaz, so rest.' This is permissible, and it is not the limit of speech nor its aspect, except that in the condition it has become a bit stronger, because it is not obligatory that it be done. Unless there is an action from the first, so when it resembles that which does not necessitate it, like the interrogative and similar, they permitted this in it despite its weakness. And it is not permissible to carry the widespread reading on a weak aspect that is not the limit of speech nor its aspect, and if it were from this category, Sibawayh would not have left it out of his book, and he mentioned its parallels from the problematic verses. If you say: How can the meaning be correct with the jasm وَيَعْلَمَ? I say: It is as if he said: Or if he wishes, he gathers between three matters: the destruction of a people, the salvation of a people, and the warning of others from a refuge away from His punishment.
