Commentary
Or is it disconnected? And the meaning of the hamzah in it is reproach. It is as if it is said: Is it for the reason that they attribute something like this to fabrication, then to the fabrication against Allah, which is the greatest and most grievous of fabrications? So if Allah wills, He seals upon your heart. If Allah wills, He makes you among those whose hearts are sealed, until you fabricate lies against Him. Indeed, no one dares to fabricate lies against Allah except one who is in a similar state to theirs. This style implies the improbability of fabrication from one like him, and that it is as distant as associating partners with Allah and entering among those whose hearts are sealed. An example of this is when one feels betrayed by the trustworthy and says, 'Perhaps Allah has forsaken me, perhaps Allah has blinded my heart,' while he does not intend to affirm forsakenness and blindness of heart. Rather, he intends to express the improbability of being betrayed like him, and to indicate that he has committed a great matter by his betrayal. Then he said: And it is the habit of Allah to erase falsehood and establish truth by His words, through His revelation or by His decree, as His saying: 'Rather, We hurl the truth at falsehood, and it crushes it.' This means: If he were a fabricator as you claim, Allah would expose his fabrication and obliterate it, and He would hurl the truth at his falsehood and crush it. It may also be a promise to the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, that He will erase the falsehood they are upon from the slander and denial, and establish the truth that you are upon with the Qur'an and with His decree that cannot be reversed of supporting you against them. Indeed, Allah is All-Knowing of what is in your heart and their hearts, and the matter proceeds accordingly. And from Qatadah: 'He seals upon your heart' means He prevents the Qur'an from reaching you and cuts off revelation from you. This means: If he were to fabricate lies against Allah, He would do that to him. It is said that 'He seals upon your heart' means He binds it with patience, so that their harm does not become difficult for you. If you say: If His saying 'And Allah erases falsehood' is an independent statement not connected to 'He seals,' why is the waw (and) omitted in writing? I say: Just as it was omitted in His saying: 'And man calls for evil,' and in His saying: 'We will call the keepers,' while it is confirmed in some manuscripts.
