Commentary
And they did not differ, meaning the People of the Book, after their prophets except after they knew that division is misguidance and corruption, and a matter threatened by the tongues of the prophets. And if it were not for a word that had preceded from your Lord, which is the respite until the Day of Resurrection, it would have been judged between them when they divided due to the enormity of what they committed. And indeed, those who inherited the Book after them, and they are the People of the Book who were in the time of the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, are certainly in doubt about their Book; they do not believe in it with true faith. It was said: People were one nation of believers after Allah destroyed all the people of the earth with the flood. When the fathers died, the children differed among themselves, and that was when Allah sent to them the prophets as bearers of good news and warners, and knowledge came to them. They only differed due to transgression among themselves. It was said: And the People of the Book did not differ except after knowledge came to them with the sending of the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, as His saying: And those who were given the Book did not differ except after the clear proof came to them. And indeed, those who inherited the Book after them are the polytheists; they inherited the Qur'an after the People of the Book inherited the Torah and the Gospel. And it was read: 'They inherited' and 'they inherited'.
