Commentary
And whatever you have differed in regarding anything is a narration of the saying of the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, to the believers. That is: what the disbelievers among the People of the Book and the polytheists have opposed you in, and you have differed with them in it regarding a matter of the religion, the ruling of that which is differed in is entrusted to Allah, the Exalted. It is He who rewards the truthful among the believers in it and punishes the false ones. That is the judge between you; it is Allah, my Lord. Upon Him, I rely in repelling the plots of the enemies of the religion and to Him, I return for sufficiency against their evil. And it is said: And whatever you have differed in and disputed regarding anything of the disputes, refer it to the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, and do not prefer any ruling over his ruling. As His saying, the Exalted, goes: 'And if you dispute in anything, refer it to Allah and the Messenger.' And it is said: And whatever you have differed in regarding the interpretation of a verse and it has become unclear to you, refer its explanation to the decisive parts of the Book of Allah and the apparent of the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him. And it is said: And whatever disagreement has occurred among you regarding knowledge that does not relate to your obligations and you have no way to know it, say: Allah knows best, like the knowledge of the soul. Allah, the Exalted, says: 'And they ask you about the soul. Say: The soul is from the command of my Lord.' If you say: Is it permissible to apply this to the differences of the jurists in the rulings of the Sharia? I say: No, because ijtihad is not permissible in the presence of the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him.
