Commentary
From the supplication of good is the request for abundance in wealth and blessings. Ibn Mas'ud read: from the supplication for good, and if evil touches him, meaning hardship and poverty, then he becomes despondent and hopeless, which is emphasized in two ways: through the structure of the word and through repetition. Despair is to show the effects of hopelessness, becoming diminished and broken, meaning to cut off hope from Allah's grace and mercy. This is the characteristic of the disbeliever, as indicated by His saying, 'Indeed, no one despairs of Allah's mercy except the disbelieving people.' When We relieve him with health after illness or abundance after hardship, he says, 'This is for me,' meaning this is my right that has reached me, because I have earned it through my good deeds and favors. Or he means, 'This is for me and will not leave me,' similar to His saying, 'And when good comes to them, they say,
