Commentary
And among them are those of whom We have not told you. It is said: Allah sent eight thousand prophets: four thousand from the Children of Israel, and four thousand from other people. And from Ali, may Allah be pleased with him: that Allah, the Exalted, sent a black prophet. [This was narrated by al-Tabari, al-Tabarani in al-Awsat, and Ibn Mardawayh from the narration of Jabir al-Ju'fi from Abdullah ibn Yahya from Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, regarding His saying: 'And among them are those of whom We have not told you,' he said: 'Allah sent a servant from Abyssinia, and he is the one of whom We have not told you.' And al-Thalabi narrated from another source from Jabir from Abu al-Tufail from Ali: 'The companions of the trench had a prophet who was Abyssinian. A prophet was sent from Abyssinia to his people.' Then he recited: 'And certainly We have sent messengers before you.' This is among those of whom We have not told you. This is in response to their proposing signs to the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, in defiance, meaning: 'Indeed, We have sent many messengers, and it was not for any one of them to bring a sign except by the permission of Allah. So who am I to bring a sign from what you propose except that Allah wills and permits it to be brought?' So when the command of Allah comes, it is a warning and a response following the proposal of the signs. And the command of Allah is the Day of Resurrection. The deniers are those who are obstinate, who proposed the signs, and the signs came to them, yet they denied them and called them magic.
