69Have you not seen those who quarrel in Allah’s verses? From where are they being turned away (by their selfish desires?) 70- those who rejected the Book and what We sent with Our messengers. So, they will soon come to know, 71when shackles will be round their necks, and chains. They will be dragged 72into the hot water after which they will be thrown into the Fire as a fuel. 73Then, it will be said to them, “Where are those whom you used to associate (in worship) 74beside Allah?” They will say, “They are lost to us, rather, we used to invoke nothing at all.” This is how Allah makes disbelievers get lost. 75(It will be said to them,) “This is because you used to rejoice on the earth wrongfully, and because you used to show arrogance. 76Enter the gates of Jahannam to live in it forever. So, how evil is the abode of the arrogant.

Commentary

In the Book, in the Qur'an, and in what We have sent Our messengers with from the Books. If you say: And is His saying, 'So they will soon know when the shackles are around their necks,' similar to your saying: 'I will fast yesterday'? I say:

The meaning is as if: except that future matters, when they are in the news of Allah, the Exalted, are certain and definite: it is expressed in the wording of what was and what existed, while the meaning is for the future. And from Ibn Abbas: 'And the chains are dragged' with the accusative and the opening of the 'ya', based on the conjunction of the verbal sentence to the nominal one. And from him: 'And the chains are dragged' with the chains of chains.

And the reasoning is that if it were said: 'When their necks are in the shackles' instead of 'when the shackles are around their necks,' it would be correct and straight. So when they are two consecutive expressions: His saying 'And the chains' is carried on the other expression. And a similar example is:

'They are not reformers of a tribe ... nor a croaker except by the separation of its crow.'

As if it were said: 'By reformers.' And it was read: 'And with the chains they are dragged into the Fire, they are made to burn,' from 'sajar' the oven when it is filled with fuel. And from it: 'sajir.' It is as if it is filled with love, meaning: it is full. And its meaning is: they are in the Fire, which is surrounding them, and they are filled with it, their insides filled with it. And from His saying, 'The Fire of Allah, which is kindled, which rises upon the hearts.' O Allah, protect us from Your Fire, for we seek refuge in Your protection. They have strayed from us, they have disappeared from our eyes, so we do not see them and we do not benefit from them. If you say: Did you not mention in the interpretation of His saying, 'Indeed, you and what you worship besides Allah are the fuel of Hell': that they are bound with their idols, so how can they be with them while they have strayed from them? I say:

It is possible for them to stray from them if they are rebuked and told: 'Wherever you were invoking besides Allah, may they help you and intercede for you,' and that they are with them at all times, except that when they do not benefit them, it is as if they are straying from them. Rather, we were not calling upon anything before, meaning it became clear to us that they were nothing, and we were not worshipping anything by worshipping them, just as you say: 'I thought that so-and-so was something, but when I informed him, I found nothing good with him.' Likewise, Allah leads astray the disbelievers, like the straying of their idols from them, He leads them astray from their idols, until if they sought the idols or the idols sought them, they would not meet. That is the straying because of what you had of joy and merriment without truth, which is polytheism and the worship of idols. Enter the seven gates of Hell that have been divided for you. Allah, the Exalted, said: 'It has seven gates; for every gate of them is a portion divided.' Abiding eternally, destined for eternity. So how evil is the abode of the arrogant who turn away from the truth and belittle it, your abode is Hell. If you say:

Is it not the case that the structure suggests that it should be said: 'So how evil is the entrance of the arrogant,' just as you say: 'Visit the House of Allah, so how good is the place to visit,' and 'Pray in the Sacred Mosque, so how good is the place to pray'? I say: The temporary entrance with eternity is in the meaning of abode.
