Commentary
When Musa, blessings and peace be upon him, heard about what Fir'awn had done regarding the killing, he said to his people, 'I have sought refuge with Allah, who is my Lord and your Lord.' His saying 'and your Lord' encourages them to follow his example, to seek refuge in Allah as he does, and to rely on Him as he relies on Him. He said 'from every arrogant one' so that his seeking refuge includes Fir'awn and others among the tyrants, and to be in a manner of allusion, making it more impactful. By arrogance, he meant the arrogance of refusing to submit to the truth, which is the worst kind of arrogance and the clearest indication of the lowliness of its possessor and the humiliation of himself, and of his extreme oppression and tyranny. He said, 'does not believe in the Day of Judgment' because when a person combines arrogance, denial of recompense, and indifference to the outcome, he has completed the reasons for hardness of heart and boldness against Allah and His servants, and he has not left a major sin except that he has committed it. 'I sought refuge' and 'I took refuge' are two synonyms. It was also read as 'I sought refuge' with the merging.
