23Indeed We sent Mūsā with Our signs and a manifest proof 24to Pharaoh and Hāmān and Qārūn, but they said, “He is a sorcerer, a liar.” 25And when he brought them the truth from Us, they said, “Kill the sons of those who have accepted faith with him, and spare the lives of their women.” But the plot of the disbelievers is nothing but a failure.

Commentary

And a clear authority and a manifest proof, which are the miracles. They said: He is a lying magician. So they called the clear authority magic and lies. When he came to them with the truth: with prophethood. If you say: Was not the killing of the sons and the keeping alive of the women due to the fear that a child would be born whom the soothsayers warned about, regarding his appearance and the end of his kingdom at his hands? I say: That killing had occurred at that time, and this is another killing. And from Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, regarding his saying: They said: Kill them. He meant to return to them the killing as it was before, indicating that this killing is different from the first killing. They are in misguidance, in loss and destruction, in vain, having found no benefit from it. This means that they initiated the killing first, but it did not avail them. And Allah's decree was fulfilled by the appearance of the one they feared. So this second killing will not avail them. Pharaoh had ceased killing the boys, but when Moses was sent and he felt that it had occurred, he returned to them with anger and fury, thinking that he would deter them from supporting Moses. But he did not know that his scheming was in vain in both instances.
