He shows you His signs from the wind, the clouds, the thunder, the lightning, and the thunderbolts, and similar things. And the provision is the rain, for it is its cause. And none remembers except he who turns to Allah. And none takes admonition or considers the signs of Allah except the one who repents from polytheism and returns to Allah. For the obstinate, there is no way for them to remember or take admonition. Then He said to those who turn to Him: 'Call upon Allah,' meaning worship Him, making the religion sincere for Him, free from polytheism. Even if this angers your enemies who are not on your religion. 'The Exalted in degrees, Lord of the Throne,' He sends down the spirit with three pieces of news, as His saying 'He' is connected to His saying 'Who shows you.' Or it could be news with a subject omitted, and they are different in definition and indefiniteness. And it has been recited: 'The Exalted in degrees' in the accusative case as a form of praise. 'The Exalted in degrees,' like His saying: 'Lord of the Ascents,' which are the ascents of the angels until they reach the Throne, and they are a proof of His might and sovereignty. And from Ibn Jubair: a sky above a sky. And the Throne is above them. And it may be a phrase indicating the elevation of His status and the height of His authority, just as 'Lord of the Throne' indicates His kingship. It is said that these are the degrees of His reward that He bestows upon His allies in Paradise. 'The spirit from His command' which is the cause of life from His command, meaning the revelation which is a command for good and a call to it, so He borrowed the term spirit for it, as He said: 'Is he who was dead and We gave him life to warn of Allah.' Or it is directed to him: meaning the Messenger or the spirit. And it has been recited: 'to warn,' meaning to warn the spirit because it is feminine, or it is directed to the Messenger. And it has been recited: 'to warn on the Day of Meeting,' in the passive form, and 'the Day of Meeting' is the Day of Resurrection, because the creatures will meet on it. And it is said: the people of the heavens and the people of the earth will meet on it. And it is said: 'The worshipped and the worshipper.' 'On the Day they will be exposed,' meaning they will be visible, nothing will cover them from a mountain or a hill or a building, for the earth will be flat and bare. And they will not have clothes, they will be naked and exposed, as it has come in the hadith: 'They will be gathered naked, barefoot, uncircumcised.' [Agreed upon from the hadith of Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her.] 'Nothing is hidden from Allah of their deeds and states.' And from Ibn Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him: 'Nothing is hidden from Him of them.' If you say: His saying 'Nothing is hidden from Allah of them' is a clarification and affirmation of their exposure, and Allah, the Exalted, does not hide from Him anything of them whether they are exposed or not, what does it mean? I say: It means that they used to imagine in this world, when they were concealed by walls and veils, that Allah does not see them and their deeds are hidden from Him. So today they are in a state of exposure and revelation to a condition that they do not imagine like what they used to imagine. Allah, the Exalted, said: 'But you thought that Allah does not know much of what you do.' And Allah, the Exalted, said: 'They hide from the people but they do not hide from Allah.' This is due to their knowledge that people see them, and their assumption that Allah does not see them. This is the meaning of His saying: 'And they will be exposed to Allah, the One, the Subduer.' 'To whom belongs the kingdom today? To Allah, the One, the Subduer,' is a narration of what will be asked about on that day and what will be answered. Its meaning is that a caller will call out saying: 'To whom belongs the kingdom today?' And the people of the gathering will respond: 'To Allah, the One, the Subduer.' And it is said that Allah will gather the creatures on the Day of Resurrection in one plain, in a white land like a piece of silver, in which Allah was never disobeyed. 'So the first thing that will be said is that a caller will call out: 'To whom belongs the kingdom today? To Allah, the One, the Subduer.' 'Today every soul will be recompensed...' The verse indicates that the caller is the one who answers.
