So verify. It has been read as 'fa-tathabbitu', and both are from the root of 'tafa'ul' meaning to seek clarification of the matter and its confirmation, and do not act hastily without reflection. [The phrase 'do not act hastily' means to be confused or to stumble without care. This was clarified in the Sahih.] And it has been read as 'as-salam' and 'as-salam', both meaning submission. It is said to refer to Islam. It is also said to mean the greeting of the people of Islam. 'You are not a believer' has been read as 'mu'minan' with an open 'mim', meaning 'we do not trust you'. The origin of this is that Mardas ibn Nuhayk, [The term 'Mardas' in the Sahih means: I threw the people and they threw back at me: if I threw them with a stone. And 'mardas' is a stone thrown into a well to know if there is water in it or not. Hence, the man was named.] a man from the people of Fadak, embraced Islam, and no one from his people embraced it except him. A battalion sent by the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, was led by Ghalib ibn Fadl al-Laythi, and they fled while Mardas remained due to his confidence in his Islam. When he saw the horses, he drove his sheep to 'Aqool [The term 'Aqool' in the Sahih refers to the wave of a river, valley, or sand.] from the mountain and ascended. When they caught up and shouted, he shouted and descended, saying: 'There is no god but Allah, Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon you.' Osama ibn Zaid killed him and drove off his sheep. They informed the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, and he was greatly distressed and said: 'You killed him intending what he had with him.' Then he recited the verse to Osama, and he said: 'O Messenger of Allah, seek forgiveness for me.' He said: 'How can I do so without 'There is no god but Allah'? Osama said: 'He kept repeating it until I wished I had not embraced Islam except that day.' Then he sought forgiveness for me and said: 'Free a neck.' 'You seek the fleeting goods of this worldly life,' meaning the spoils that are quickly consumed. It is he who calls you to abandon verification and to be careless about the condition of those whom you kill. 'Indeed, with Allah are many spoils which He will grant you that will suffice you from killing a man who shows Islam and seeks refuge in it from being harmed so that you may take his wealth. 'Thus, you were before when you first entered Islam, you heard from your mouths the word of testimony, which secured your blood and wealth without waiting to know if your hearts were in agreement with your tongues. So Allah bestowed upon you uprightness, and you became known for your faith and advancement. If you become prominent, you must treat those who enter Islam as you were treated, and you should regard the outward appearance of Islam in conflict. Do not say that the declaration of this is to avoid being killed, not out of sincere intention, so that you make it a means to permit his blood and wealth, which Allah has made unlawful. And His saying 'So verify' is a repetition of the command to verify to emphasize it upon them. 'Indeed, Allah is All-Aware of what you do,' so do not rush into killing and be cautious in that.
