Commentary
Contemplation of the matter: it is to reflect upon it and to look into its outcome and what it leads to in its consequences and end. Then it was used in every contemplation. So the meaning of contemplating the Qur'an is to reflect on its meanings and to perceive what is in it. If they had found in it much contradiction, much of it would have been differing and contradictory, with its arrangement and eloquence and meanings varying. Some of it would reach the limit of miraculousness, while some would fall short of it and could be opposed. Some of it would be news of the unseen that corresponds with what is reported about it, while some would be news that contradicts what is reported about it. Some of it indicates a correct meaning according to the scholars of meanings, while some indicates a corrupt meaning that is not coherent. When all of it resonates with miraculous eloquence surpassing the abilities of eloquent speakers and supports the correctness of meanings and the truth of reports, it is known that it is only from One capable of what no one else can do, and knowledgeable of what no one else knows. If you say: Is not the like of His saying: (So when it is a clear serpent), (As if they were jinn), (So by your Lord, We will surely question them all), (And on that Day, no one will be asked about his sin, neither man nor jinn) a form of contradiction? I say: It is not contradiction according to those who contemplate.
