Commentary
Whoever obeys the Messenger has certainly obeyed Allah, for he does not command except what Allah has commanded, and he does not prohibit except what Allah has prohibited. Thus, his obedience in complying with what he has commanded and refraining from what he has prohibited is obedience to Allah. It has been narrated that he said: 'Whoever loves me has loved Allah, and whoever obeys me has obeyed Allah.' [[I did not find it.]] The hypocrites said: 'Do you not hear what this man is saying? He has committed shirk while he forbids the worship of anyone other than Allah! This man only wants us to take him as a lord, just as the Christians took Jesus.' Then the verse was revealed: 'And whoever turns away from obedience, then turn away from him, We have not sent you except as a warner, not as a guardian over them to preserve their deeds and hold them accountable for them, nor to punish them, as in His saying: (And you are not a guardian over them).
