Commentary
Al-Jibt: the idols and everything that is worshipped besides Allah. And Al-Taghut: the devil. This is because Huyayy ibn Akhtab and Ka'b ibn Al-Ashraf, the two Jews, went to Mecca with a group of Jews to ally with Quraysh against the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him. They said: You are the people of the Book, and you are closer to Muhammad than we are, so we do not trust your deceit. So prostrate to our idols until we feel secure with you, and they did so. This is their belief in Al-Jibt and Al-Taghut because they prostrated to the idols and obeyed Iblis in what they did. Abu Sufyan said: Are we on a better path or Muhammad? Ka'b said: What does Muhammad say? They said: He commands the worship of Allah alone and prohibits polytheism. He said: And what is your religion? They said: We are the guardians of the House, we give drink to the pilgrims, we honor the guest, and we free the captive. And they mentioned their deeds. He said: You are on a better path.
