Commentary
Did you not see from the vision of the heart, and it was conveyed to, meaning: Did your knowledge not reach them? Or meaning: Did you not look at them? They were given a share of the Book, a portion of the knowledge of the Torah, and they are the Jewish scholars who buy misguidance, exchanging it for guidance, which is remaining upon Judaism, after the signs have become clear to them regarding the truth of the Prophethood of the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, and that he is the Arab prophet foretold in the Torah and the Gospel. And they want you, O believers, to go astray from the path of truth as they have gone astray, and to join their ranks; their misguidance is not enough for them, but they love for others to go astray with them. And it has been read: that they go astray, with the pronoun 'they' with an open 'dhal' and a broken 'dhal'. And Allah knows better than you about your enemies, and He has informed you of the enmity of these, and He has made you aware of their conditions and what they intend for you, so beware of them and do not seek their counsel in your affairs nor consult them. And sufficient is Allah as a protector, and sufficient is Allah as a helper, so trust in His protection and assistance over them. Or do not care about them, for Allah will grant you victory over them and will suffice you against their plots.
