Commentary
And do not wish for that which Allah has favored some of you over others, in terms of status and wealth. For that preference is a division from Allah, stemming from wisdom, management, and knowledge of the conditions of the servants, and of what is suitable for the one to whom it is divided, whether it be an expansion in provision or a restriction. (If Allah were to expand provision for His servants, they would surely transgress in the land.) So, everyone must be content with what has been divided for them, knowing that what has been divided for them is for their benefit. If it were otherwise, it would be harmful to them. And do not envy your brother for his share. For men have a share of what they earn. Allah has made what is divided for both men and women according to what He knows of their conditions that necessitate either expansion or restriction in their earnings. And ask Allah for His bounty, and do not wish for the shares of others from His favor. Rather, ask Allah from His treasures that do not diminish. It was said that the men said: 'Indeed, Allah has favored us over women in this world: we have two shares and they have one share. So we hope to have two rewards in the Hereafter for our deeds, while they will have one reward.' Then Umm Salamah and the women with her said: 'If only Allah had prescribed for us jihad as He prescribed for men, so that we would have a reward like theirs.' Then this verse was revealed.
