Commentary
The major sins from which you are forbidden. It has also been recited: 'the major sin from which you are forbidden,' meaning what is great among the sins that Allah forbids you from and the Messenger. We expiate your sins, in a manner that suffices for what you deserve of punishment at all times for your minor sins, and make them as if they were not, for the increase of the reward deserved for your avoidance of the major sins and your patience regarding them, in contrast to the punishment of the sins. The major and minor sins are described as such by being related either to obedience or disobedience or the reward of their doer. The saying 'or the reward of their doer' means their recompense. The phrase could also be understood as 'the reward of the one who leaves them,' but the copyist altered it, so it should be clarified. Expiation is the removal of the deserved punishment by a greater reward or by repentance. And 'nullification' is its opposite, which is the removal of the deserved reward by a greater punishment or by regret over obedience. And from Ali, may Allah be pleased with him: the major sins are seven: associating partners with Allah, killing, false accusation, adultery, consuming the wealth of the orphan, fleeing from battle, and reverting to pre-Islamic ways after migration. It has been narrated by Al-Tabari through Muhammad ibn Ishaq from Muhammad ibn Sahl ibn Khaythama from his father, who said, 'I was in this mosque, the mosque of Kufa, and Ali was delivering a sermon,' and he mentioned it. And Ibn Umar added: magic and declaring the sacred house lawful. And from Ibn Abbas: a man said to him: are the major sins seven? He said: they are closer to seven hundred, for there is no minor sin with persistence, nor major sin with seeking forgiveness. Abdul Razzaq narrated that Ma'mar said from Ibn Tawus from his father that it was said to Ibn Abbas: are the major sins seven? He said: they are closer to seventy. Al-Tabari narrated from the narration of Qais ibn Sa'd from Said ibn Jubair from Ibn Abbas that a man asked him about the major sins: are they seven? He said: they are closer to seven hundred because there is no minor sin with persistence... until the end. It has been narrated as seventy. And it has been recited: 'He expiates,' with a 'ya.' And 'entrance' can be pronounced with a closed or open 'm,' meaning the place and the source in both.
