Commentary
So believe, it is better for you. And likewise, (cease, it is better for you) is implied. This is because when He commanded them to believe and to stop the trinity, He knew that He was directing them towards a matter, so He said: (it is better for you), meaning aim for it, or come to a matter better for you than what you are in of disbelief and trinity. It is faith and monotheism. Do not exceed in your religion as the Jews exceeded in lowering the status of the Messiah, by making him born of illegitimacy. And the Christians exceeded in elevating him beyond his worth by making him a god. And do not say about Allah except the truth, which is His being free from partners and offspring. Ja'far ibn Muhammad read (Indeed, the Messiah) with the weight of 'sukīt'. And it was said to Jesus (the Word of Allah) (and a Word from Him) because he came into existence by His word and command alone, without the intermediary of a father or sperm. And he was called the Spirit of Allah, and a Spirit from Him, because he has a spirit that came into existence without being a part of a being with a spirit, like the sperm separated from a living father. And he was created by Allah and His power alone. And the meaning of (He cast it) to Maryam is that He conveyed it to her and placed it within her. (Three) is a subject of a deleted predicate. If the narration is true that they say: He is one essence with three hypostases, the hypostasis of the Father, the hypostasis of the Son, and the hypostasis of the Holy Spirit. And they mean by the hypostasis of the Father: the essence, and by the hypostasis of the Son: the knowledge, and by the hypostasis of the Holy Spirit: the life. So its estimation is Allah is three, or otherwise its estimation is: the gods are three. And what the Qur'an indicates is their explicit statement that Allah, the Messiah, and Maryam are three gods, and that the Messiah is the son of Allah from Maryam. Do you not see His saying: (Did you say to the people, 'Take me and my mother as two gods besides Allah?'), and (The Christians say, 'The Messiah is the son of Allah'). And it is widely known among them that they say: In the Messiah there is divinity and humanity from the father and the mother. And this is indicated by His saying: (Indeed, the Messiah, Jesus, son of Maryam). He affirmed that he was born to Maryam, connected to her as children are connected to their mothers, and that his connection to Allah, the Exalted, is in that he is His messenger, and that he exists by His command and creation as a living body without a father. He negated that he is connected to him as children are connected to fathers. And His saying: (Glorified is He that He should have a son) and the narration of Allah is more trustworthy than the narration of others.
And the meaning of (Glorified is He that He should have a son) is that He is glorified from having a son. Al-Hasan read: 'If he were to have a son', with a broken hamzah and a raised noon: meaning glorified is He that He would have a son. The speech is two sentences: (To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth) is a clarification of His being free from what is attributed to Him, meaning that all that is in them is His creation and ownership. So how can part of His ownership be a part of Him, while a part is only valid in bodies, and He is exalted above the attributes of bodies and accidents? And sufficient is Allah as a Trustee; He entrusts all creation with their affairs, and He is free of need from them while they are in need of Him.
