Commentary
That when you hear it, it is that the lightened form of the heavy one. The meaning is that when you hear, it has been revealed to you that the matter is such and such, and the matter is what the sentence has conveyed by its condition and consequence. And 'that' with what is in its scope is in the position of raising by 'has been revealed,' or in the position of lowering by 'has been sent down,' for those who read it that way. And what has been revealed to them in the Book is what was revealed to them in Mecca from His saying: (And when you see those who engage in our verses, turn away from them until they engage in a different talk). This is because the polytheists used to engage in mentioning the Qur'an in their gatherings and mock it, so the Muslims were forbidden from sitting with them as long as they were engaging in it. And the rabbis of the Jews in Medina acted similarly to the actions of the polytheists, so they were forbidden to sit with them just as they were forbidden from sitting with the polytheists in Mecca. And those who sat with those engaging in the Qur'an from the rabbis were the hypocrites. It was said to them that you are then like the rabbis in disbelief. Indeed, Allah will gather the hypocrites and the disbelievers, meaning those who sit and those who are sat with. If you say: To whom does the pronoun in His saying 'So do not sit with them' refer? I say: To those indicated by 'disbelieved in it and mocked it,' as if it were said: So do not sit with the disbelievers in it and the mockers of it. If you say: Were they not like them by sitting with them at the time of engagement? I say: Because if they did not disapprove of them, they were pleased. And the one who is pleased with disbelief is a disbeliever. If you say: Why were the Muslims in Mecca—when they sat with those engaging from the polytheists—not hypocrites? I say: Because they did not disapprove due to their inability, and these did not disapprove with their ability. Thus, leaving disapproval was due to their pleasure. Those who are waiting for you, either a replacement for those who take or an attribute of the hypocrites or an accusative for blame from them (They are waiting for you) meaning they are waiting for what may happen to you of victory or failure. Did we not used to be with you, supporting you? So give us a share in the spoils. Did we not overpower you and manage to kill you and capture you, so we spared you and prevented you from the believers by discouraging them from you, and we made them see what weakened their hearts and they became ill in fighting you, and we were negligent in supporting them against you? So bring us a share of what you have obtained. And it was read (And we prevent you) in the accusative by implying 'that.' Al-Hutay'ah said: Did I not used to be your neighbor, and there was between us love and brotherhood? If you say: Why was the victory of the Muslims called a conquest, while the victory of the disbelievers was called a share? I say: To exalt the status of the Muslims and to diminish the portion of the disbelievers, because the victory of the Muslims is a great matter. The victory of the Muslims opens for them the gates of heaven until it descends upon His allies. As for the victory of the disbelievers, it is nothing but a lowly share and a moment of this world that they obtain.
