Commentary
And do not weaken and do not be weak and do not be negligent in seeking the people, in pursuing the disbelievers through fighting and confronting them. Then He established the proof against them by saying: If you are suffering, meaning that what you endure of pain from injury and killing is not exclusive to you. Rather, it is a matter shared between you and them; it afflicts them as it afflicts you. Then they endure it and show courage. So why do you not endure like their endurance, while you are more deserving of patience than they are, because you hope from Allah what they do not hope for, which is the triumph of your religion over all other religions, and the great reward in the Hereafter. And Al-A'raj read: 'If you are suffering,' with the opening of the hamzah, meaning: And do not weaken because you are suffering. And His saying: 'Indeed, they are suffering as you are suffering' is an explanation. And it was read: 'Indeed, they are suffering as you suffer.' It has been narrated that this was during the Battle of Badr al-Sughra, when they had wounds and they became negligent. And Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise; He does not burden you with anything nor commands you or prohibits you except for what He knows is beneficial for you.
