Commentary
What he was calling to was that he forgot the harm he was calling Allah to remove. It was said: he forgot his Lord, to whom he was supplicating and beseeching. And 'what' is in the meaning of 'that', as in His saying: 'And He did not create the male and the female.' It is recited: 'to lead astray', with the opening of the 'b' and with the 'b' being closed, meaning that the result of making rivals to Allah is his leading astray from the path of Allah or his causing others to go astray. The result may be an intention in the action, or it may not be an intention. And His saying: 'Enjoy your disbelief' is from the aspect of abandonment and letting go, as if it is little for him: since you have refused to accept what you were commanded regarding faith and obedience, it is your right not to be commanded with it thereafter, and to be commanded to abandon it: a hyperbole in his abandonment and letting go and his condition. For there is no exaggeration in abandonment, for it is more severe than being sent to act contrary to what he was commanded. An example of this in meaning is His saying: 'A little enjoyment, then their abode is Hell.'
