Commentary

It is recited: "He saves and He saves by their success." It is said: "He succeeded in such and such" if he has prospered by it and attained his desire from it. The interpretation of "success" is His saying: "No evil will touch them, nor will they grieve." It is as if it were said: What is their success? It was said: "No evil will touch them," meaning He saves them by negating evil and grief from them. Or due to their salvation, from His saying: "So do not think that they are in safety from the punishment," meaning in safety from it, because salvation is one of the greatest successes. The reason for their salvation is righteous deeds, and for this reason Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, interpreted success as good deeds. It is permissible to say: due to their success, because righteous deeds are the reason for success, which is entering Paradise. It is also permissible to call righteous deeds in themselves "success," because they are its cause. And it is recited: "by their successes," on the basis that every pious person has a success. If you say: What is the grammatical position of "No evil will touch them" according to the two interpretations? I say: As for the first interpretation, it has no grammatical position, because it is a new statement. As for the second, its position is in the accusative as a circumstantial phrase.
