Tafsir for verses: 39:50, 39:51, 39:52
50The same was said by those before them, but what they used to earn was of no avail to them, 51and they were overtaken by the evils of what they had earned; and the wrongdoers from these (infidels too) will be overtaken by the evils of what they have earned - and they will not be able to escape. 52Do they not know that it is Allah who extends provision to whomsoever He wills, and straitens (it for whomsoever He wills). Surely in that, there are signs for a people who believe.

Commentary

The pronoun in 'He said it' refers back to his saying 'Indeed, I was given it based on knowledge,' because it is a word or a phrase of speech.

And it has been recited: 'He has said it' in the sense of saying and speech. And those who came before them are Qarun and his people, as he said: 'Indeed, I was given it based on knowledge I have,' and his people were pleased with it, as if they said it. It is also possible that there were others among the previous nations who said similar things.

So what did their wealth and what they earned from the pleasures of this world avail them? From these polytheists of your people, they will be struck by what struck those, as their leaders were killed at Badr, and sustenance was withheld from them, causing them to suffer drought for seven years. Then it was extended for them, and they were rained upon for seven years. It was said to them: 'Did they not know that there is no withholder or bestower except Allah, the Exalted and Majestic?'
