A warner from among them, a Messenger from themselves. And the disbelievers said, and He did not say: 'They said,' to show anger towards them, and to indicate that this saying can only be uttered by the disbelievers who are deeply entrenched in disbelief and engrossed in error. About them, He said: 'Those are the disbelievers truly.' Do you see any disbelief greater and ignorance more profound than to call someone whom Allah has confirmed with His revelation a liar, and to marvel at the Oneness, which is the truth that nothing else is valid, while they do not marvel at polytheism, which is false and has no basis for its validity? It has been narrated that the believers rejoiced greatly at the Islam of Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, and it was difficult for Quraysh, and it reached them. So, twenty-five of their leaders gathered and went to Abu Talib and said: 'You are our elder and our chief.' [[Al-Thalabi mentioned it without a chain. Al-Tirmidhi, Al-Nasa'i, Ibn Hibban, Ahmad, Ishaq, Abu Ya'la, Al-Tabari, Ibn Abi Hatim, and others narrated it through the route of Yahya ibn 'Imarah from Sa'id ibn Jubair from Ibn Abbas. He said: 'Abu Talib fell ill, and Quraysh came to him, and the Prophet ﷺ... the narration is similar.' And it does not include the beginning.]] And you know what these foolish ones have done, meaning: those who entered into Islam, and we have come to you to judge between us and your nephew. So Abu Talib summoned the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: 'O my nephew, these are your people asking you a question [[The phrase 'asking you a question, so do not lean' may refer to 'the same,' as in the wording of Al-Nasafi. (A)]] so do not lean too much away from your people.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'What do they ask me?' They said: 'Reject us and reject the mention of our gods, and we will leave you and your God.' He, peace be upon him, said: 'What if I give you what you ask, will you give me a single word by which you will dominate the Arabs and the non-Arabs will submit to you?' They said: 'Yes, and ten more, meaning we will give you that and ten words with it.' He said: 'Say there is no god but Allah.' They stood up and said: 'Has he made the gods into one God? This is indeed a remarkable thing,' meaning: profound in amazement. And it was read: 'remarkable,' with emphasis, like His saying: 'A great plot.' This is more eloquent than the softened form. An example of this is: 'Generous' and 'noble' and 'nobles.' And His saying: 'Has he made the gods into one God?' is similar to His saying: 'And they made the angels who are servants of the Most Merciful female.' In that the meaning of 'making' is to declare in speech as a claim and assertion, as if he said: 'Has he made the group into one in his saying,' because that is impossible in action.
