Commentary
Among his followers are those who supported him on the foundations of religion, even if their laws differed. Or they supported him in being steadfast in the religion of Allah and enduring the deniers. It is permissible that there is agreement between their laws in most matters. And from Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him: from the people of his religion and upon his Sunnah. And there were only two prophets between Noah and Abraham: Hud and Salih. And there were two thousand six hundred and forty years between Noah and Abraham. If you ask: What does the preposition refer to? I say: It refers to what is in the followers of the meaning of support, meaning: and among those who supported him in his religion and piety when his Lord came to him with a sound heart for Abraham. Or it refers to an omitted phrase: remember with a sound heart free from all heart ailments. And it was said: from polytheism, and there is no meaning to the specification because it is general, so not some ailments are more deserving than others; it encompasses them all. If you ask: What is the meaning of coming to his Lord with his heart? I say: It means that he dedicated his heart to Allah, and He recognized that from him, so the coming is an example for that. 'Is it a lie?' is an object for it, meaning: Do you want gods besides Allah that are lies? And the object was placed before the verb for emphasis, and the object for it was placed before the object because it was more important for him to confront them by stating that they are upon lies and falsehood in their polytheism. It is also possible that 'a lie' is an object, meaning: Do you want it to be a lie? Then he explained the lie by saying 'gods besides Allah' as they are lies in themselves. And it is permissible that it is a state, meaning: Do you want gods besides Allah that are lying? So what do you think of one who is worthy of worship? Because the one who is the Lord of the worlds deserves to be worshipped by them, until you left His worship for the worship of idols. The meaning is that it cannot be imagined in thought or assumption what would deter from His worship. Or what do you think of Him? What is He in relation to things, until you made the idols rivals to Him? Or what do you think He will do to you and how will He punish you after you have worshipped others?
