Commentary
The word: His saying: "Indeed, they are the ones who will be supported, and indeed, Our soldiers are the ones who will prevail." He called it a word, although it is several words, because when they are arranged in one meaning, they are like a single word. And it was read: "Our words"; the intended meaning is the promise of their superiority over their enemies in the battles of the pilgrims and the clashes of fighting in this world, and their superiority over them in the Hereafter, as He said: "And those who feared Allah will be above them on the Day of Resurrection." It is not necessary that they be defeated in some battles, and what happened to them of killing, for the victory was for them and for those who come after them in the end. The battles of the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, and the rightly guided caliphs are enough as examples to be followed and lessons to be learned from. And from Al-Hasan, may Allah have mercy on him: No prophet was defeated in war nor killed in it, because the foundation of their matter and its basis, and the prevailing aspect of it, is victory and support—even if there was a mixture of trial and hardship within that—and the ruling is for the victor. And from Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with both of them: If they are not supported in this world, they will be supported in the Hereafter. And in the reading of Ibn Mas'ud: "upon Our servants," implying a meaning that has been established.
