Commentary
The name 'Ilyas' is read with a broken hamzah, and 'al-Yas' is in the form of connection. It is said that he is Idris the Prophet. Ibn Mas'ud read: 'And indeed Idris' in the place of Ilyas. It is also read as 'Idras.' It is said that he is Ilyas the son of Yasin, from the descendants of Harun, the brother of Musa. 'Do you call upon Baal? Do you worship Baal?' This is the name of an idol they had, like Manat and Hubal.
It is said that it was made of gold, and its height was twenty cubits, and it had four faces. They were tempted by it and revered it until they appointed four hundred priests to serve it, and they made them its prophets. The devil would enter into the belly of Baal and speak with the law of misguidance, and the priests would memorize it and teach it to the people. They are the people of Baalbek from the land of Sham, and their city is named Baalbek after it. It is said that 'Baal' means 'the lord' in the language of Yemen. It is said: 'From the lord of this house,' meaning: from its owner?
The meaning is: 'Do you worship some of the lords and leave the worship of Allah, your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers?' It is read in the nominative as a beginning, and in the accusative as an alternative. Hamza would read it in the accusative when connected, and in the nominative when stopping. It is also read: 'al-Yasayn,' 'Idrisayn,' 'Idrasayn,' and 'Idrisayn,' as they are dialects for Ilyas and Idris. Perhaps the addition of the yā and nūn in Syriac has a meaning. It is read: 'al-Yasayn' in connection, as it is a plural intended for Ilyas and his people, like their saying: 'the Khabibun' and 'the Muhallibun.' If you say: 'Why not take this 'al-Yasayn' as a separate and its sisters?' I say: If it were a plural, it would be known by the definite article. As for those who read: 'the family of Yasin,' it is based on the fact that Yasin is the name of the father of Ilyas, to which the family is attributed.
