114Certainly We bestowed favors upon Mūsā and Hārūn, 115and We delivered them and their people from the great agony, 116and We helped them, so they became victors, 117and We gave them the clear book, 118and guided them to the straight path. 119And We left for them (a word of praise) among the later people, 120(that is,) Salām be on Mūsā and Hārūn! 121This is how We reward those who are good in their deeds. 122Surely, both of them were among Our believing servants.

Commentary

From the great distress of drowning. Or from the tyranny of Pharaoh and his people and their oppression. The pronoun refers to both of them and their people in His saying: 'And We saved them and their people.' The clear book, eloquent in its statement, is the Torah, as He said: 'Indeed, We sent down the Torah in it is guidance and light.' And He said: 'It is permissible that the Torah be Arabic, that it is derived from the word that means 'to kindle' (the fire), with the 't' being substituted for the 'w' of the straight path, which is the path of the people of Islam, and it is the path of those upon whom Allah has bestowed favor, not of those who have evoked [His] anger nor of those who are astray.
