Commentary
From the great distress of drowning. Or from the tyranny of Pharaoh and his people and their oppression. The pronoun refers to both of them and their people in His saying: 'And We saved them and their people.' The clear book, eloquent in its statement, is the Torah, as He said: 'Indeed, We sent down the Torah in it is guidance and light.' And He said: 'It is permissible that the Torah be Arabic, that it is derived from the word that means 'to kindle' (the fire), with the 't' being substituted for the 'w' of the straight path, which is the path of the people of Islam, and it is the path of those upon whom Allah has bestowed favor, not of those who have evoked [His] anger nor of those who are astray.
