Commentary
There were the heretics among them who heard the believers attributing the actions of Allah, the Most High, to His will. They would say: If Allah had willed, He would have enriched so-and-so; if He had willed, He would have honored him; if He had willed, it would have been like this. They presented this response in a manner of mockery towards the believers and what they used to say about attributing matters to the will of Allah. Its meaning is: Do we feed the one about whom this saying is made among you? This is because they were rejecting that wealth and poverty are from Allah, as they were deniers who do not believe in the Creator. Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, said: There were heretics in Mecca. When they were commanded to give charity to the poor, they would say: By Allah, does Allah make him poor and we feed him? It was said that they were implying that since Allah, the Most High, is able to feed him but does not will to feed him, then we are more deserving of that. This was revealed concerning the polytheists of Quraysh when the poor companions of the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, said: Give us from what you claim of your wealth that it is for Allah, referring to His saying: 'And they made for Allah a share of what He created of crops and livestock.' They deprived them and said: If Allah had willed, He would have fed you.
