Commentary
Skinning the sheep: when he strips it off and removes it. From it: skinning the snake for its skin. It is borrowed to mean the removal of light and revealing it from the place of night, and those who are in darkness, it is said: we have darkened, just as you say: we have made it dark and we have made it dusk. For its resting place, it has a limit set for it that it reaches from its orbit at the end of the year, likened to the resting place of a traveler when he completes his journey, or to its limit from the east and the west, because it seeks it out, east by east and west by west, until it reaches its utmost, then it returns, and that is its limit and resting place, because it does not exceed it, or to its limit from its journey every day in the sight of our eyes, which is the west. It is said: its resting place is the term that Allah has decreed for it in its course, so it settled upon it, which is the end of the year. It is said: the time in which it settles and its course ceases, which is the Day of Resurrection.
