Commentary
We bring the dead to life; we resurrect them after their death. Al-Hasan said: Their coming to life means bringing them out of polytheism to faith. And We record what they have sent forth of good deeds and others, and what they have perished from of good effects, such as knowledge they taught, or a book they authored, or a prisoner they imprisoned, or a building they constructed: like a mosque, or a ribat, or a bridge, or something similar. Or bad deeds, like a duty imposed by some tyrants on the Muslims, and a path they created that caused them loss, and something they introduced that distracted from the remembrance of Allah: like melodies and amusements. Likewise, every good or bad practice that is followed. And similar is His saying, 'The human will be informed on that Day of what he has sent forth and kept back.' This means: what he has sent forth of his deeds and what he has kept back of his effects. It was said: These are the effects of those who walk to the mosques. And from Jabir: We wanted to move to the mosque and the areas around it, [This was narrated by Ibn Hibban in the first of the first through Abu Nadrah from him. Its origin is in Muslim.] empty, so this reached the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, and he came to us in our homes and said: 'O Banu Salamah, I have heard that you want to move to the mosque.' We said: Yes, the mosque and the areas around it are empty. He said: 'Stay in your homes. For your effects are recorded.' He said: We did not wish to be present at the mosque after the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, said this. And from Umar ibn Abdul Aziz: If Allah were to overlook anything, He would have overlooked these effects that the winds erase. And the Imam: the tablet. And it was read: 'And He writes what they have sent forth and their effects' as a passive construction. And everything is recorded.
