Tafsir for verse: 35:40
40Say, “Tell me about your (presumed) co-gods whom you invoke beside Allah. Show me that part of the earth that they have created. Or do they have a share in the (creation) of the heavens?” Or have We given them a book so that they are upon a clear proof from it? No, but the wrongdoers promise one another nothing but delusion.

Commentary

Show me is a substitute for Have you seen: because the meaning is: Have you seen? Inform me. It is as if he said: Inform me about these partners and what they deserve of divinity and partnership. Show me any part of the earth that they have created without Allah. Or do they have a partnership with Allah in the creation of the heavens? Or do they have a book from Allah that speaks of them being His partners, so they have proof and evidence from that book? Or the pronoun in We have given them could refer to the polytheists, as Allah, the Most High, says: Or have We sent down upon them a proof? Or have We given them a book before it? Rather, some of them, and they are the leaders, deceive some of the followers, except for delusion. This is their saying: These are our intercessors with Allah. And it was read: clear signs.
