Commentary
So they die is the answer to the negation, and its accusative is implied as 'that': and it was read: 'so they will die', as an addition to 'it is decreed', and including it in the ruling of negation, meaning: death is not decreed upon them, so they do not die, like His saying, 'And they are not permitted to excuse themselves.' Likewise, such a recompense 'is recompensed' and it was read: 'is rewarded'. And we will recompense every ungrateful one with the letter 'n'. They cry out: they shout, meaning they engage in shouting with effort and intensity. He said: Like the cry of a pregnant woman whom her people have abandoned. And the woman does not exit her house for marriage upon reaching maturity. And 'the abandoned' refers to the tough, difficult she-camel. And 'to saddle' means to tighten the saddle on the she-camel. And 'the saddles' are the saddles and litters, with the letter 'j' being delayed. As for 'the thrust' - with the letter 'h' being delayed - it refers to mixing and mingling, meaning: she went to a tough she-camel to tighten the saddle on her, while it was the time for her to depart from those dwellings. And 'the moaning' is the low sound of sorrow, meaning: you are like the moan of the captive at first, and you cried out with a raised voice like the cry of a pregnant woman at labor whom her people have abandoned, leaving her with the midwife who assists her at childbirth. The midwife is the one who attends to the woman at childbirth and receives the child upon its exit.
And it was used in seeking help for the effort of the one seeking help with his voice. If you say: Why did he not suffice with 'righteous' as he sufficed with it in His saying, 'So send us back to work righteousness'? And what is the benefit of adding 'other than that which we used to do' as it indicates that they will do another righteousness other than the righteousness they did? I say: Its benefit is the increase of regret over what they did that was not righteous while acknowledging it. As for the delusion, it is removed by the appearance of their state in disbelief and committing sins, and because they thought they were upon a righteous path, as Allah said, 'While they think they are doing well.' So they said: 'Send us back to work righteousness other than that which we thought was righteous, so we may do it.' Did We not give you long life? A reproach from Allah, meaning: We say to them. And it was read: 'what is mentioned in it', from 'mention' with assimilation, and it encompasses every age in which the accountable person was able to rectify their affairs, even if they fell short, except that the reproach in the prolonged life is greater.
And from the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him: 'The age in which Allah has excused the son of Adam is sixty years.' It was narrated by Al-Bazzar from the narration of Sa'id Al-Maqbari from Abu Huraira, raised to him. Its origin is in Al-Bukhari, with the wording: 'Whoever has been given sixty years of life, Allah has excused him in life.' And Al-Hakim erred in correcting it. And Ibn Mardawayh narrated it from the hadith of Sahl ibn Sa'd. And from Mujahid: what is between twenty and sixty. And it was said: eighteen and seventeen. 'The warner' is the Messenger, blessings and peace be upon him. And it was said: 'the gray hair'. And it was read: 'And the warners came to you.' If you say: What is the reason for the conjunction 'and the warners came to you'? I say: It is in the meaning of: 'Did We not give you long life?' because its wording is that of inquiry. Its meaning is that of informing, as if it were said: 'We have given you long life and the warners came to you.'
