They were blind, for they did not look at the heavens and the earth. They are wherever they are, and wherever they walk, surrounded by them, unable to escape from their boundaries or to leave what they are in of the dominion of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic. They did not fear that Allah would cause the earth to swallow them or send down upon them fragments, due to their denial of the signs and their disbelief in the Messenger, blessings and peace be upon him, and in what he brought, just as He did with Qarun and the companions of the Thicket. Indeed, in that, looking at the heavens and the earth and contemplating them, and what they indicate of the power of Allah, is a sign and evidence for every servant who turns back to his Lord and is obedient to Him. This is because the one who turns back does not cease to reflect on the signs of Allah, knowing that He is capable of everything, from resurrection to the punishment of those who disbelieve in Him. It has been recited as 'yashā' and 'yakhsif' and 'yusqit': with a 'ya', due to His saying, 'Has he fabricated a lie against Allah?' and with a 'noon' due to His saying, 'And indeed We have given.' And 'fragments' is recited with an open 's' and a silent one. Al-Kisai recited: 'yakhsif bihim', with assimilation, and it is not strong.
