Commentary
The first indication is to the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, and the second to the Qur'an. The third is to the truth, and the truth encompasses all of Prophethood and the religion of Islam as it is. In His saying, 'And those who disbelieved said,' and in that He did not say, 'And they said,' and in His saying, 'When the truth came to them,' and what is in the two 'lam's indicating the speakers and what is spoken about, and in 'when' indicating the abruptness of disbelief: there is evidence of the speech arising from great denial and intense anger, and astonishment at their matter is profound, as if He said: 'And those disbelievers, who are rebellious in their audacity against Allah and their stubbornness towards such clear truth before they have tasted it, said, 'This is nothing but clear magic.' So they decisively judged it to be magic, then they judged it to be clear and evident to every rational person who reflects upon it, and they called it magic.
