Commentary
Those in whose hearts is a disease are a people who have weakness in faith and little steadfastness in it. It is said: They are the fornicators and the people of immorality, from His saying, 'So let him who has a disease in his heart hope.' And the rumor-mongers are people who used to spread bad news about the expeditions of the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him. They would say: They were defeated and killed, and such and such happened to them, thus breaking the hearts of the believers. It is said: He spread rumors about such and such, if he informed of it without truth, as it is a shaky news that is not firm, from 'rajfah' which means earthquake. The meaning is: If the hypocrites do not cease their enmity and plotting against you, and the wicked from their immorality, and the rumor-mongers from the bad news they fabricate: We will certainly command you to do to them the deeds that will cause them distress and burden them. Then, we will compel them to seek to leave the city, and that they do not dwell with you except for a little while, until they gather their souls and their families. It was said: The meaning of His saying, 'except for a little while until they gather their families and themselves, and nothing else.' It was said: And in it is an indication that whoever is required to vacate a property owned by another in a lawful manner, is given a respite to move himself, his belongings, and his family for a period of time, until he secures another place according to his efforts, and Allah knows best. Thus, it is called incitement, which is instigation in a metaphorical sense. Cursed are they, which can be understood as an insult or a state, meaning: They will not dwell with you except as cursed ones. The particle of exception has entered upon both the circumstance and the state, as mentioned in His saying, 'except that you are permitted to food without waiting for its time.' It is not correct for it to be taken from 'they were taken' because what follows the conditional word does not act upon what precedes it. It was also said regarding 'a little' that it is also in the accusative case. Its meaning is: They will not dwell with you except as few, humiliated, and cursed. If you say: What is the position of 'they will not dwell with you'? I say: 'They will not dwell with you' is an addition to 'We will certainly command you,' for it is permissible to respond to the oath with it. Do we not see the correctness of your saying: 'If they do not cease, they will not dwell with you'? If you say: Was it not right for 'they will not dwell with you' to be connected with 'fa' (then), and to say: 'We will incite you against them, so they will not dwell with you'? I say: If the second were made a consequence of the first, it would be as you said, but it has been made another response to the oath, added to the first, and it was added with 'thumma' (then), because leaving one's homeland is greater upon them and more significant than all that they have suffered. Thus, its state is more delayed than that of the one it is connected to. The Sunnah of Allah in the place of a confirmed source is: Allah has ordained for those who hypocritize the prophets to be killed wherever they are found. And from Muqatil: It means as the people of Badr were killed and captured.
