55There is no sin for them (the wives of the Prophet) in (appearing without Hijāb before) their fathers, or their brothers, or the sons of their brothers, or the sons of their sisters, or their own (Muslim) women, or their slave-girls. And (O wives of the Prophet,) fear Allah. Surely, Allah is witness to every thing.

Commentary

It is narrated that when the verse of hijab was revealed, the fathers, sons, and relatives said: 'O Messenger of Allah, should we also speak to them from behind the hijab?' So the verse was revealed: 'There is no sin upon them,' meaning there is no sin upon them for not being veiled from these. The uncle and maternal uncle were not mentioned, because they are like the parents, and the uncle has been referred to as a father.

Allah, the Exalted, said: 'And the God of your forefathers, Abraham, Ishmael, and Isaac,' and Ishmael is the uncle of Jacob. It was said that it is disliked to leave hijab from them because they describe her to their sons, and their sons are not mahram. Then the speech was shifted from the third person to direct address, and in this shift, there is an indication of the virtue of strictness.

So it was said: 'And fear Allah regarding what you have been commanded about hijab,' and revelation was sent down regarding concealment. And you should observe it and what has been exempted from it as much as you are able. And preserve their limits and follow the path of piety in safeguarding them. And let your actions in hijab be better than when you were not veiled, so that your secret is better than your public. Indeed, Allah is All-Aware of everything, both in secret and in public, and of the apparent hijab and its essence. He is a Witness and His knowledge does not differ regarding the states.
