And do not obey the disbelievers. Its meaning is: to remain steadfast on what one was upon. Or it means to provoke them. It is possible to attribute it to the doer and the object. It means: Leave off harming them with harm or killing, and take them at face value, and their reckoning is with Allah in their inner selves. Or: Leave off what they harm you with and do not retaliate against them until you are commanded. And from Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, it is abrogated by the verse of the sword. And place your trust in Allah, for He is enough for you against them, and He is sufficient as a trustee. One may say: Allah described him with five attributes, and addressed each one with a suitable address. He addressed the witness with the saying: And give good tidings to the believers, for he will be a witness over his nation and they will be witnesses over all other nations. This is the great favor and the good tidings of turning away from the disbelievers and the hypocrites, for when he turns away from them, he turns all his attention to the believers. This is suitable for the good tidings and the warning against their harm, for when he leaves off their harm in the present—and harm must have a punishment, whether immediate or delayed—they would be a warning in the future. And the caller to Allah by making it easy with His saying: And place your trust in Allah, for whoever relies on Allah, He makes every difficult matter easy for him. And the illuminating lamp by being sufficient with Him as a trustee, for whoever Allah has illuminated with a proof over all His creation, is worthy of being sufficient with Him over all His creation.
