Commentary
The Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, proposed to Zainab bint Jahsh, the daughter of his aunt Umayma bint Abd al-Muttalib, for his freed slave Zayd ibn Harithah. She refused, and her brother Abdullah also refused. Then it was revealed, and he said: 'We are pleased, O Messenger of Allah.' So he married her to him and set her dowry at sixty dirhams, a headscarf, a cloak, a shield, a waist-wrapper, fifty measures of food, and thirty sa' of dates. [I did not find it connected. Its beginning is in al-Daraqutni from the narration of al-Kumayt ibn Zayd al-Asadi, the poet, from Muthakkar ibn Zayd al-Asadi, the freed slave of Zainab bint Jahsh, from Zainab bint Jahsh: 'She said: Several men from Quraysh proposed to me. My sister Hamna sent to consult the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him. He said to her: Where is she in relation to her husband? [Al-Thalabi narrated this without a chain, and al-Tabari reported it from the narration of Abdur-Rahman ibn Zayd ibn Aslam from his saying.] The meaning is that it is not permissible for a man or a woman among the believers, when Allah and His Messenger have decreed a matter, to choose for themselves what they wish, but rather it is their right to make their opinion follow His opinion, and their choice should be in accordance with His choice. If you say: It was appropriate for the pronoun to be singular, as you say: No man or woman came to me except that it was their nature to do such and such. I say: Yes, but they fell under negation, so it applies to every believer and believer, thus the pronoun returned to the meaning and not to the wording. And it was read: 'becomes,' with the feminine and masculine.
